Allium bulbs planting instructions

Rich, well-drained soil

Plant your allium bulbs in the autumn in rich, well-draining soil, to double the depth of the bulb. Water-in your allium bulbs lightly. Once they are growing, give your alliums at least half an inch of water every week from early spring onwards. You should fertilize them a few times in spring with organic compost, aged manure or a water-soluble, general-purpose fertilizer. Keep weeds in check so the bulbs aren’t deprived of nutrients.

Full sun

Plant your allium bulbs where they will receive plenty of sun.

Allium maintenance instructions

Dead-head your alliums before the seeds disperse if you wish to avoid seedlings. Flower heads can be left on the plant to dry. The dried seed heads look pretty in the garden, and can also be cut for indoor arrangements. Keep allium foliage watered after flowering to feed the plant.

Low maintenance flowers

Alliums require very little care once the plant is established. Once the leaves turn yellow, you can cut them down at ground level. Each year, smaller bulbs will grow around the parent bulb. You can gently lift the plant out of the ground and detach the smaller bulbs if the plant becomes crowded. The smaller bulbs can be planted elsewhere in the garden, or given to friends.

Spectacular appearance in your garden

One of the great things about alliums, as well as their spectacular appearance, evocative of a firework mid-explosion, is that their onion fragrance will naturally repel most animals and pests.

Allium bulbs which are dried after harvest have a long shelf life if kept in cool, dry conditions.

Our allium bulbs, as well as all our other products, are delivered with detailed planting instructions.
