Moist soil

Canna rhyzomes prefer consistently moist soil. With this in mind, you should water plants throughout the summer if rainfall is below 1 inch per week. You should also water container-grown cannas frequently to keep soil moist.

Full Sun

Canna lilies do best in full sun. Put them in the shade and you risk them not blooming at all.

Canna maintenance instructions

Plant canna rhizomes in spring once all danger of frost has subsided and the soil has become warmer. Prepare the garden bed with a garden fork or tiller, loosening the soil to a depth of 12 to 15 inches, then mix in a 2- to 4-inch layer of compost. Dig a hole 4 to 6 inches deep. Position the canna rhizome horizontally in the hole, cover it with soil, then press firmly. Water thoroughly. In regions with short summers, start canna rhizomes indoors by potting up and placing them in a warm, sunny location.

Apply a 2- to 4-inch layer of mulch around cannas to retain moisture and control weeds. Stake tall varieties to keep them upright. Remove flowers as they fade. In autumn, after frost kills the foliage, cut your canna plants back to 6 inches tall. Canna leaves are coated in a waxy substance, meaning water is repelled and fungus doesn't normally take hold.

Enjoy your cannas again next year

Store your rhizomes in a box after flowering season

Carefully lift each clump of canna rhizomes and put them in a plastic-lined box filled with perlite or peat moss, spacing them so that none are touching. Store boxes off the floor in a dry area at 7 to 12 degrees C. Replant your canna rhizomes in the spring.

Our canna rhizomes and all our bulbs are delivered with detailed planting instructions.
