Caring for Hemerocallis (daylilies )Hemerocallis (daylily) is a hardy perennial known for its reliability and longevity. It grows best in a sunny position or light partial shade, in well-drained, fertile soil. The more sun the plant receives, the richer the flowering.
Plant daylilies in spring or autumn, with the crown just below soil level. Water well after planting to help the plant establish. Once established, Hemerocallis is relatively drought tolerant, although watering during dry periods will encourage better flowering.
A general garden fertiliser can be applied during the growing season, but heavy feeding is unnecessary. Removing spent flowers helps keep the plant tidy and encourages new buds to form.
Hemerocallis is fully hardy and can remain in the ground throughout winter. The foliage dies back in winter and re-emerges in spring. After a few years, the clump can be divided to maintain vigour and produce new plants.
