Crocus Sativus is an autumn flowering crocus also known as the Saffron Crocus. Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world. The three threads (or stigmas) of each flower are carefully picked and dried. A laborious task as you can imagine. Many dried threads are needed to harvest just an ounce of Saffron. Saffron is sometimes also used for medicinal purposes or as a colouring agent. Who can resist having such an exotic beauty in the garden?
